Description

This is a lock located on the Caldon Canal in Cheddleton, constructed around 1779 with alterations made in the mid-19th century and lock gates added around 1981. The lock features stone retaining walls that have been patched with blue brick and concrete within the channel. On the lower face, there are sandstone steps that wind up from the canal level on the left and ascend the embankment on the right. Wrought iron spandrels support a catwalk that spans the lower entrance to the lock. This structure is part of a group that includes a nearby bridge.
