Description
This is a lock on the Caldon Canal in Bagnall, constructed around 1779 with modifications made in the mid-19th century and new gates added around 1981. The lock features stone retaining walls that display numerous masons' marks, with some areas patched using blue brick and concrete within the channel. Sandstone steps are located on either side of the lower face, leading up the embankment. Wrought iron spandrels support the catwalk that spans the lower entrance to the lock. This lock is part of a group that includes stables, the Stanley Road bridge, and the lock-keeper's cottage.
