Description

Consall New Lock is a canal lock built around 1779, with early 19th century alterations and lock gates added around 1981. It features sandstone ashlar retaining walls, although some have been replaced with concrete. The lower side has retaining walls that taper down to the left and are cut short and curved to the right, with winding stone steps that rise from the canal level to the lock against the side of the wall. There is also a wooden-framed catwalk over the entrance. The Caldon Canal was constructed to transport limestone from Caldon Low and was originally surveyed by James Brindley, later succeeded by Henshaw and John Rennie.
