Description

This is an early 19th-century lime kiln situated on the side of the Caldon Canal in Consall, Staffordshire. Constructed of rock-faced ashlar, the kiln comprises a retaining wall approximately 10 metres high and 50 metres long. It features four bays, each heavily buttressed by inclined sections rising to the full height of the wall. Four stoke-holes, round-arched and measuring approximately 2 metres in height, are set between the buttresses. The kiln was built to use lime supplied from Caldon Low via the canal, for use in the nearby Froghall Forge.
