Description

This is a canal milepost dated 1820, standing approximately 80 cm high. It is set on a circular shaft with a convex rectangular display. The top of the display is divided centrally, with the left side inscribed "ETRURIA/ 14 /MILES" and the right side inscribed "UTTOXETER/ 16/ MILES." The head of the milepost is finished with a dome, and the base features a small quatrefoil inscribed with "R&D/ STONE/ 1820." This milepost dates from the second phase of the Caldon Canal, after it was extended to Uttoxeter.
