Description
Cherryeye Bridge is a canal road bridge located at SK 014 481, built around 1779. It is constructed from coursed dressed and squared stone. The bridge features a roughly 3-centred arch and has a flat-top parapet that is humped over the span and slightly curved out at the ends. The name "Cherryeye" comes from its use as an access route to a nearby ironstone mine, which is now disused. Miners returning home would have a distinctly cherryeye appearance due to the ironstone dust. The Caldon Canal, which the bridge served, was built to transport limestone from Caldon Low and was completed to Froghall by 1779. The canal was first surveyed by James Brindley, later taken over by Henshaw, and completed by John Rennie around 1801.
