Description

The Hermitage is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of dressed and squared red sandstone of ashlar quality, with a tiled roof and verge parapets featuring pitched copings. A brick stack is centrally located in the valley of the roof. The plan comprises two parallel ranges. The front facade has two storeys and two windows, with a 3-light mullioned window with small panes. The entrance is slightly left of centre and features a heavy lintel carved with an ogee arch and a circle within the tympanum. The garden front includes 5-light and 3-light chamfered mullion windows, with a French casement inserted to the right and a lower addition to the right end. The house exhibits reasonably homogenous construction, with the front facade attempting an 18th-century style, while the rear displays more typical and archaic details suggesting a 16th-century origin.
