Description
This is a roving bridge located on the Leek Branch of the Caldon Canal in Cheddleton, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared and dressed stone, featuring rounded copings. The bridge has concave faces and an elliptical arch, with a string course at carriageway level. The parapets and carriageway are cambered over the span and end with piers on the west side. This section of the Caldon Canal was opened around 1801 to facilitate the transport of cheaper coal to Leek, designed by engineer John Rennie.
