Description

The bridge at SJ 944 537 is an accommodation bridge built in the late 18th century. It is constructed from coursed dressed and squared stone and features an elliptical arch. There is a raised string at carriageway level, and the parapet is slightly cambered over the span with piers at each end, topped with rounded coping. This section of the Caldon Canal was opened around 1779 to facilitate the transport of limestone from Caldon Low, designed by engineers Brindley and Henshaw.
