Description
This barn, located approximately 20 meters east of Stable House Farmhouse, dates from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed from moulded copper-slag blocks with sandstone ashlar dressings and features a tiled roof with verge parapets. The barn has a two-level plan, consisting of a loft above a stable and cattle shed.
On the exterior, there is one loft door at the right end and a segmental-arch stable door to the left, which is flanked by small windows. There is an additional door to the right beneath the loft opening, and a lean-to structure is attached to the right end. The left end of the barn has a block with initials moulded into it.
This barn, along with a small shed, is part of a group that includes the farmhouse and two other barns, making it a unique example in the area due to its unusual construction material. The nearby smelting site, located about 200 meters to the north, suggests that this group may have been intended to promote the wider use of these copper-slag blocks, although this goal was never realized. It is also possible that the name of Black Lane is derived from the striking inky iridescence of the building materials used.
