Description
Stable House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed from moulded copper-slag blocks that are partially rendered, with a tiled roof featuring verge parapets and brick end stacks. The building is two stories high and has a two-window front, with small-pane casements that have painted surrounds. The entrance is located at the rear. This farmhouse, along with two barns nearby, is the only example in the area made from such an unusual material. The smelting site for the copper-slag blocks was located approximately 200 meters to the north, and the group may have been intended to promote the wider use of these blocks, which ultimately did not happen. It is also possible that the name of the lane comes from the distinctive inky iridescence of the construction.
