Description

No. 8 The Close is a house dating from around 1860, which features a refronting of an earlier structure, possibly from the 18th century. It is built of brick with ashlar dressings and has a double-gabled tile roof with a brick stack, arranged in a right-angle plan.

The house has three storeys and a two-window range. At the base, there is a plaster plinth, and the gables are adorned with enriched bargeboards that have pendants. A brick pilaster is located at the left end. The entrance, positioned at the right end, features a segmental head with roll-moulded reveals and a four-pane door, sheltered by a gabled timber porch that matches the gables. To the left, there is a two-storey canted bay window with stop-chamfered jambs, timber panelling between the floors, a cornice, and casement windows. The other windows have moulded sills and segmental-pointed heads, with ashlar springers and hoods that have carved stops. The first-floor window on the right is tripartite, supported by two colonnettes with foliate capitals. A stack is located to the right of the valley, and there is a cast-iron rainwater head featuring a dragon and a downspout. At the rear, there is a two-storey lean-to outshut with a tall stair window that has small-paned glazing set in a recess.

This building is included for its group value.
