Description

Number 24 is a house, partially converted to flats, dating from approximately 1461. It has undergone substantial alterations in the late 17th century, the 18th century, and around 1814. The construction is primarily brick, with dressed stone to the basement and front left angle, and features a complex tile roof with brick stacks.

The house is two storeys with a basement and attic, and has a three-window front. A gabled end is present on the left, with a recessed gabled end on the right. The building exhibits enriched bargeboards and similar fascia. The central entrance is defined by a porch with a cornice and parapet, incorporating an elliptical arch-within-arch, and a half-glazed door. The ground-floor window on the left side has a stucco surround and label mould to three ogee-headed lights, fitted with a 12-pane sash. Other windows have plain surrounds and 12-pane sashes. The gable on the left contains a blocked window with a four-centred head. The left return displays masonry on the ground floor, with a stone lintel and brick flat arch over a blocked fireplace, likely formerly part of a kitchen. A cogged cornice marks a projecting gabled first-floor section, which has an end stack. The right return features basement windows with a cross-casement and a four-light transomed casement. The ground floor includes an entrance and window with a rubbed brick flat arch, alongside two segmental-headed windows, one positioned within a blocked larger opening, all fitted with 12-pane sashes. The first floor has segmental-headed windows, two with 12-pane sashes, two with paired sashes, and one cross-casement, also incorporating a gabled dormer. The rear elevation has a gable with a large stack to the left of a rebuilt section. A summerhouse with a loggia is situated above the left end; two basement windows have three-light pegged casements. Upper windows have rubbed brick flat arches and 12-pane sashes, further accompanied by gabled dormers.

The interior includes a winding stick-baluster staircase. The basement retains significant early structure, built from brick and some stone, including brick vaulting and cellars. The front right cellar has a blocked brick stair on a half arch, while the rear cellar contains a 19th-century range and a bread oven. The flat features an ashlar fireplace with a Tudor arch in an architrave, and an early 18th-century six-fielded-panel door. Limited access to the roof space reveals two original roofs and a blocked two-light window; a small light to the valley has a casement with a fleur-de-lis catch.

The attached short brick wall to the front right includes a garden gate and pier, leading to a rear entrance of Newton's College. A wall attached to the rear right extends to the rear wall of the Garden of Remembrance and is constructed of 18th-century brick on a stone base. Despite considerable alteration, the house is considered one of the original houses of The Close, and demonstrates group value through its historic ties and architectural significance.
