Description
No. 6 The Close is a house that was originally part of the lower court of Vicars' Close. It dates back to the 14th century, with an early 18th-century south facade. The building features a timber frame with a brick front and some dressed stone, topped by a tile roof with brick stacks. It has two storeys and a three-window range, with some stone at the base. The entrance is located to the right of the centre, accessed by opposing stone steps with a plain iron handrail, and includes an overlight above a four-panel door. The windows consist of small-paned cross-casements. The rear of the house has brick underbuilding supporting a close-studded first floor. Architectural details include a moulded bressumer and plain eaves. The entrance features a wide-boarded door, and the fenestration varies: the ground floor has a two-light pegged casement, while the first floor has a small leaded light situated between large leaded casements, which have iron opening lights and are remnants of oriels with moulded bases and projecting moulded sills. Inside, the house is noted for having re-set 16th-century linenfold panelling. Originally, the house faced north into the lower court of Vicars' Close and may have served as a Canon's house, but it was re-oriented to face south in the early 18th century.
