Description
The remains of the north side of the west gate of the Close fortifications in Lichfield date back to around 1300, with completion likely between 1322 and 1258, commissioned by Bishop Langton. The structure is made of ashlar and stands approximately two storeys high, featuring short returns. It has an offset at the top and a plinth on the left return, along with a small segmental-headed entrance. This is one of the few visible remnants of the Close fortifications, as the rest of the gate was demolished to make way for Newton's College.
