Description

Darwin House is a Grade I listed house located on Beacon Street in Lichfield, built around 1758. It was converted from a medieval timber-framed range on the west side of the south court of Vicars' Close and was commissioned for Erasmus Darwin. The building is constructed of brick with stucco dressings and features a double-span tile roof with brick end stacks. It has a double-depth, central staircase plan and is designed in the Georgian style.

The house stands two storeys tall with a basement and has a symmetrical three-window range. The stucco basement includes two sill bands, a top modillioned cornice, and a stone-coped brick parapet with two balustraded panels. The central section of the façade breaks forward under a pediment. The round-headed entrance features a Tuscan aedicule and a round-headed half-glazed door, with opposing ashlar steps that have an iron handrail and an arch below.

Each floor has Venetian windows adorned with Tuscan antae, entablatures, archivolts, and sashes with glazing bars. The central first-floor window has an eared architrave, a triple key, and a nine-pane sash. The rear of the house includes a rounded-headed stair window with a sash, flanking windows with rubbed brick flat arches and twelve-pane sashes, and three upper windows, two of which have six-pane sashes while one is blocked. The gables are coped, and there is a cross-axial stack.

Erasmus Darwin, who lived in this house until around 1781, was a doctor and a member of the Lunar Society. His work in botany and zoology contributed to his exploration of evolutionary theory, and he was the grandfather of Charles Darwin.
