Description

The Angel Croft Hotel and attached outbuilding, along with their front railings and gates, date from around 1750. The hotel is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has a hipped slate roof with lateral stacks. It follows a double-depth plan and is designed in the Georgian style. The three-storey, symmetrical facade features a five-window arrangement. Architectural details include a plaster plinth, ground and first floor sill bands, a top cornice, and a blocking course. The round-headed entrance has an aedicule with Doric columns and a Tuscan entablature with a fluted frieze and pediment. Above the six-fielded-panel door is a fanlight with thick glazing bars. The ground and first floor windows have sills and rubbed brick flat arches over 12-pane sashes; second floor windows have 6-pane sashes. The rear of the hotel features a tall, round-headed stair window with glazing bars and flanking full-height canted bays. A tall stair window is also present on the right return. The outbuilding to the front right has a ramped cornice and two windows with 9-pane horned sashes, connected to the front by a stone-coped brick wall with railings featuring fleur-de-lys finials. The enriched central paired gates have similar gate piers and an overthrow with two lantern holders. The railings and gates were separately listed on March 6, 1970.
