Description

Westgate House, built around 1750, is a Georgian-style house with attached outbuildings, front walls, gates, and railings located on Beacon Street in Lichfield. The house features a stucco exterior with brick rear wings and a graduated slate roof, complemented by stucco end stacks and tile on the rear. It has a double-depth plan with two rear wings and is three storeys tall, presenting a symmetrical five-window façade. The top cornice and parapet are accentuated by coped gables.

The round-headed entrance is framed by an aedicule with fluted Doric antae and a triglyph entablature, topped with a fanlight that has radial glazing bars above paired doors with three fielded panels. The windows throughout the house have sills, with 12-pane sashes on the lower floors and 6-pane sashes on the second floor. The left side of the house features segmental-headed windows on the first floor with 9-pane sashes, a cogged cornice, and a cross-axial stack.

The attached outbuilding has coped gables and various openings. At the rear, there is a projecting gabled wing to the right, an entrance in a trellis porch, and a shallow bay with a tripartite sash window to the left, along with a round-headed stair window. The brick walls connecting the house to the low ashlar front walls are topped with iron railings, and there are enriched wrought-iron gate piers, paired gates, and an overthrow. The railings and gates were listed separately on March 6, 1970.
