Description

Number 10 Newton's College is an almshouse built between 1800 and 1805 by Joseph Potter Snr of Lichfield for Andrew Newton. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a front-facing graduated slate roof with ashlar stacks. It has a double-depth plan and is designed in a classical style, standing three storeys high with a two-window range facing Bird Street.

The exterior includes a plain plinth, a platt band above the ground floor, and a top frieze and cornice, along with end pilaster strips. The windows are fitted with sills and 12-pane sashes, with those on the first floor set in round-headed recesses. The left return features a recessed left half with a brick arcade on the ground floor, topped with a brick lozenge parapet, a second-floor sill band, and a cornice. The plain entrance is accompanied by windows on the left half that have rubbed brick flat arches, while the left end of the right half has small-paned casements. The right return includes blind windows on the second floor. This building was established to provide accommodation for the widows and single daughters of clergymen.
