Description
Nos. 9, 9A, and 9B on The Close is a house that forms part of the lower court of Vicars' Close, now divided into flats and a shop. It was likely remodeled in the 17th century and further altered in the early to mid 18th century, with a top storey added in the mid 19th century. The building is constructed of brick, with the front painted and featuring ashlar dressings, and has a tiled roof with brick stacks.
The house has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high, displaying a symmetrical five-window arrangement. There is a brick platt band above the ground floor and a moulded brick cornice with two coped gables, along with end brick pilasters. Each end has an entrance featuring a doorcase with panelled pilaster strips and a bracketed canopy, along with a narrow overlight above a half-glazed door. The central 19th-century two-storey canted bay window includes sill bands, a top cornice, and an embattled parapet, with segmental-headed windows that have plate glass sashes. The other windows are also segmental-headed with sills and plate glass sashes, and there is a small casement window above the bay. The gables have slits, and the rear of the building features two gables and a 19th-century lean-to outshut.
