Description
No. 7 The Close is a house originally part of the lower court of Vicars' Close, now serving as an office. It dates from the 15th century, with a reconstruction at the southeast corner. The building features a timber frame with ashlar underbuilding to the south and east, and has a tile roof with brick stacks. It has a right-angle plan facing the Cathedral, with a small wing to the right. The house is two storeys high with an attic and has a two-window range.
To the right, there is a small plastered wing with a cornice. The entrance features a doorcase with panelled pilaster strips and a frieze, topped with a cornice, and includes an overlight above a six-flush-panel door; there is a round-headed entry at the right end. The ground floor window has a sill and a four-pane sash, while the first floor has a tripartite sash with a 2:4:2-pane configuration and a two-light casement to the right. The attic contains a two-light casement, with a similar window in the gabled dormer to the right. The left return has small windows on the ground and first floors, and the right return shows some exposed timber-framing and the entrance.
