Description
The conduit at the north-west corner of The Close in Lichfield is a conduit head and pump built in 1786. It is made of ashlar stone and features a tall square structure that encases the pump, along with a low platform. The pump casing has a band below a round niche on each face and a simple domed cap. There is a slit for the handle on the west side and a spout on the north side. The platform includes an inset stone basin. This conduit was originally established around 1140-1147, with its water supply increased in 1259, making it an early example of piped water supply. The original structure was demolished and replaced by the current one, which was later superseded by a conduit located in the garden of No. 15 in 1803.
