Description

St Chad's School House is a house that has been converted into a school. It dates from the 18th century, possibly built on earlier foundations, and was extensively remodeled in the early 19th century by Joseph Potter Snr of Lichfield. Further alterations occurred around 1865 when the top floor and tower were added, along with some later 20th-century additions. The building is constructed of brick and has a tiled roof with brick stacks, forming a U-plan layout.

The exterior features three storeys with a seven-window range, including two windows in each end wing and one in the re-entrant entrance tower. There is a modillioned brick band above the first floor, plain bargeboards on the half-hipped end wings and the center, and a cogged brick cornice on the tower. The plain Tudor-headed entrance has a panelled door and a statue above it with a canopy. The windows have sills; those on the ground floor have rubbed brick flat arches, while the right end has a canted bay with a hipped roof and cambered-headed windows. The upper floors also have cambered-headed windows, all fitted with four-pane sashes, except for the top floor of the tower, which has two narrow sashed windows. Iron finials adorn the wings and the pyramidal roof of the tower.

The left return is similar but includes later added wings; the entrance features a six-flush-panel door, with sashed and some casement windows, as well as a tall stair window with iron opening lights. The interior, mostly from 1865, includes a room with a rich cornice. The building became part of the Cathedral School in 1942.
