Description
15 The Close is a house located in Lichfield, primarily dating from the late 17th century, but it incorporates earlier elements from a building that existed by 1367. The house underwent an extension and interior remodelling around 1800. It features a stucco exterior with tile roofs and brick stacks.
The building has a two-unit plan with a left wing, a single-storey wing projecting to the right, and a double-depth rear wing. It stands two storeys high with an attic, showcasing two gables with a parapet between them, as well as a parapet between the lateral stack and the left gable. The tall single-storey wing is located below the gable on the right side.
The entrance on the left is marked by an ashlar porch with panelled pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice, leading to a half-glazed door with small-paned glazing above two flush panels. The windows include a 12-pane sash on the ground floor, two 9-pane sashes on the first floor, and two casement windows in the attic. The right wing has an end truncated stack and three return windows with 12-pane sashes. The left wing features a coped gable and architraved 12-pane sashes. The right return displays three gables with varied fenestration, including a 6/3-pane sash on the ground floor, two pegged cross-casements with leaded glazing on the first floor, and two-light leaded casements. The left return has varied casements next to the rear of the left wing, which contains windows with brick sills and heads, including 16-pane and 4/8-pane sashes. The rear of the left wing includes an L-plan single-storey service wing.
