Description
No. 10 The Close is a house that was originally part of the south range of Vicars' Close. It likely dates from the 15th century, with alterations made around 1600. The building features a timber frame and painted brick, topped with a tile roof and a brick stack. It has a right-angle plan and stands two storeys tall, with a three-window range. The first floor jetties out above a brick underbuilding, and the gable also jetties. The windows have leaded glazing; the ground floor includes pegged cross-casement windows with leaded glazing flanking a window with two pointed timber lights. The first floor has a continuous oriel window from around 1600, supported by a coved soffit, featuring three cross-casements with H-L hinges. The 16th-century gable has bargeboards and herringbone framing that conceals the original oversailing rafter couple. The right return has a lateral stack that was originally projecting, but the walls have been built out to create a flat facade. The entrance features a canopy over a four-fielded-panel door, which has two glazed panels and a small leaded side light. There is also a small light and a six-pane casement window on the first floor. The interior is noted to have a ceiling from around 1600 and a newel stair, with timber framing visible on the left return. This house is part of a range of five vicar's lodgings.
