Description
29 The Close is a building dating from the 13th or 14th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is two storeys high and has a stucco facade with a steep gable end roof covered in old tiles. The front features a large gable on the right side and a two-storey gabled porch from the 14th century, both adorned with 19th-century bargeboards.
On the first floor, beneath the large gable, there is a tall three-light casement window, while the ground floor has a two-light transomed casement. To the left of the porch, there are two-light casements on both floors, all of which are 19th-century windows with drip moulds. The porch includes a small pointed window facing east on the first floor, and the entrance has a pointed arch with chamfered, moulded jambs.
Originally, the house likely featured an open hall with cross wings, but only the eastern part remains today. The first floor retains much of the roof from the former east cross wing, which consists of five bays with massive tie beams, collars supported by cambered brackets, and a crown post in the partition wall, along with cross bracing and three tiers of curved windbraces. Some purlins and rafters have been replaced. The northernmost bay is sealed and narrower than the others, suggesting it was a smoke bay, likely part of the service wing.
The west partition of the large first-floor room includes wall posts and studding. The western roof, covering two bays, is a later alteration that may have involved resetting, featuring a king post, collars, and curved windbraces. On the ground floor, there is a chamfered stone arch in the hall, and the panelling is likely 19th-century and has been reset. The rear of the building is constructed of stone rubble and brick on the east side, with an external chimney.
