Description

26 The Close is a late 18th-century building that stands three stories high with a basement. It is constructed of colourwashed brick, featuring stone bands at each floor level and chamfered stone quoins above the second-floor windows. The building has a small moulded eaves cornice and a hipped roof covered with old tiles.

On the second floor, there are four small squash windows, while the first floor has four tall windows fitted with Venetian shutters. The ground floor also has four windows without glazing bars, and there are four additional windows in the basement. All windows are topped with rubbed brick arches and keystones.

The central entrance features a six-panel door that is reached by seven moulded stone steps. The doorcase is adorned with pilasters that have moulded and rosetted caps, and it is decorated with a string of bell-shaped flowers descending from the caps, with a ribbon bow at the top. The arched opening has cross-fluted surrounds and encloses an arched fanlight with a reversed curved glazing pattern. The pilasters support a moulded and dentilled broken entablature, topped with a similar open pediment.

The east front of the building mirrors this design, with one casement window on each floor, except for two in the basement. All the listed buildings in The Close form an outstanding group.
