Description
25 The Close is a building originally constructed as two houses in the 14th century, but it was recased in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is two storeys high and made of colour-washed brick set on a projecting plinth. There is a moulded string course at the first floor level. The roof has a steep pitch and is hipped, covered with old tiles, and features a moulded and coved eaves cornice.
On the first floor, there are three windows grouped in the center, while the ground floor has two windows. The windows are framed with flush architraves and have intact glazing bars. A modern door is set beneath the left-hand window and is surrounded by an early 19th-century entrance with pilasters and a cornice hood.
There are one-storey wings on either side of the main building, designed similarly but with coping above the cornice and hipped roofs. The northern half of the house contains a 14th-century staircase, while the southern part features a Jacobean staircase.
All the listed buildings in The Close create an outstanding group.
