Description
No. 8 The Close is a late 17th-century building, altered in the 18th century. It forms a continuous wing and roofline with No. 9 The Close. The building is two storeys high with an attic and basement, and is constructed of colourwashed brick with a brick band between the floors. It features an old tile roof with bracketed eaves spaced at one foot intervals, and three dormers with leaded casements.
The window arrangement on the main floors was altered in the 18th century, with four windows on the first floor and two to the left on the ground floor. These are flush architrave framed sash windows with intact glazing bars. One original 17th-century window remains on the right-hand side of the ground floor, a two-light leaded casement with a stone mullion and transom, set within a stone surround. Further traces of original windows are visible: a blocked stone mullioned and transomed window to the right on the first floor, and remains of stone heads of the original windows above the 1st floor windows.
The off-centre entrance has a 19th-century glazed door protected by a flat hood supported on cut brackets, and is approached by six stone steps with 18th-century guard rails and belled top standards. The basement has three two-light stone mullioned leaded casements. A large red brick chimney with an irregular group of shafts rises to the left of the ridge.
The listed buildings within The Close form a notable group.
