Description

11 The Close is a Grade II* listed building dating from 1594, featuring an 18th-century front and significant rebuilding of an older structure. This three-storey house is built of brick on a projecting stone plinth, with painted bands at the first and second floor levels. It has chamfered stone quotas and a small moulded and bracketed stone cornice, topped by a brick parapet with stone coping that sweeps up at the angles. The roof is covered with old tiles.

The upper floors have five windows, with square windows on the second floor, while the ground floor has four windows, all featuring keystones. The central entrance has an eight-panel door with a rectangular fanlight that displays a delicate oval pattern enriched with lead ornaments. The doorhead is reeded and spans across panelled reveals, framed by an architrave. The doorcase is flanked by semi-engaged reeded columns with a plain base, an enriched frieze that breaks forward over the columns, and decorative elements including a rosette ornament, a central urn, and swag and scroll foliage. A small flat moulded cornice completes the entrance.

The house also features a good knocker, likely of Italian design, depicting intertwined dolphins. The side walls are tile-hung with mathematical tiles on timber framing. Inside, the back part of the house contains some 16th and 17th-century panelling, along with 18th-century panelling and stucco work.

To the east, there is a stable yard that includes a late 18th-century two-storey L-shaped service wing and a screen wall, which connects to a coach house featuring 18th-century timber framing in the gable, a loft hatch, and double doors. All the listed buildings in The Close form an outstanding group.
