Description
Milepost located on Henhurst Hill in Tatenhill, dating from the 19th century. It is a hollow cast iron triangular shape with a sloping top, painted white with raised black lettering and a black painted base. The base features the founder's mark: 'CHARLES LATHE & Co./TIPTON'. The inscriptions on the milepost read: on the left side, "NEWBOROUGH 4 ½ MARCHINGTON 7 ½ ABBOTS BROMLEY 8 UTTOXETER 11", and on the right side, "BURTON 3", with "ROLLESTONE" on the top. This milepost is well-preserved in its original location and is part of a group of listed mileposts that indicate routes in East Staffordshire. It serves as a reminder of the increasing significance of road transport in the 19th century and is a notable example of a milepost in situ, justifying its listing.
