Description
No. 1 Old Street, which also includes No. 17 Tower Street, is a restaurant and shops that date from the 15th to the 17th century, with 20th-century alterations. The building is rendered and has a plain tile roof that is hipped at No. 17. Originally, it had a street-corner courtyard plan, which has since been filled in. The structure is two stories high, with an attic at No. 17. It features a five-window range of 20th-century windows and shopfronts, with significant undercutting at the corner. The Tower Street front is similar, with undercutting that recalls the original jetty. There are two gabled dormers. The interior of the shop on the right likely has a 16th-century spine beam and heavy rafters. Although the interior was not fully inspected, No. 17 is reported to retain a late medieval roof in the front half, complete with curved wind braces and timber-framing of heavy scantling in the rear half.
