Description
The Tolsey, located on an island site, is a market hall that has been converted into shops. It dates from the late 15th century and underwent significant restoration in the 20th century. The north front features a timber-frame and plaster design with a plain-tile roof added in the 20th century. The building is two stories tall with a cellar and has a three-window range with 20th-century leaded lights and casements set in studwork. To the left, there is a late 19th-century shopfront with a central half-glazed entrance flanked by canted windows. To the right, a doorway has been converted into a window within a moulded case, accompanied by a 20th-century shop window. There is also a single-storey wing to the right with a late 19th-century shopfront.
The west front has a rubble ground floor with box framing above, featuring 20th-century leaded lights and a door. A single-storey extension includes a late 19th-century shop window with a casement above, set under a cambered head. The east front has a narrow pentice beneath a part-restored moulded bressummer and a sandstone plinth with two cellar openings. The south front showcases a restored post and pan design on the first floor, with two 20th-century leaded light casements. The ground floor is stuccoed to the right with a 20th-century casement, while the left side has rubble with a 20th-century glazed door and light. There are 19th-century iron railings with a gate leading to the cellar entrance, topped with urn finials on the posts.
Inside, the Tolsey retains its main frame posts with chamfered arch braces and a main ceiling frame with diagonal beams. An early 19th-century stair shows traces of earlier steps. The first floor features chamfered ceiling beams, two large spine beams, and chamfered main frame posts throughout. There are four trusses with chamfered tie beams and queen struts.
