Description

The Old Bull Ring Tavern is a 17th-century inn located in Ludlow. It features a timber-frame and plaster construction with 20th-century plain tiles and has two roof lines, each topped with twin gables and brick stacks at the rear. The building has a two-unit plan.

The left-hand unit is three stories tall and has a two-window range with 20th-century lattice leaded mullion and transom windows set in studwork. The second floor jetties out on enriched consoles with a moulded bressummer. It also has two 20th-century lattice leaded mullion windows in box framing with chevron bracing. The twin gables, which jet out on a moulded bressummer supported by enriched consoles, display studding and cusped quarter bracing. The inn front has been updated in the 20th century with entrances on both the left and right.

The right-hand unit is also three stories with an attic and features a two-window range with two paired 18th-century 6/6 sash windows in moulded cases under the jetty. The second floor has two casements set in studwork, and the jettied dormers have leaded lights in moulded cases, scrolled consoles, and moulded barge boards. This unit also has a 20th-century inn front with a central entrance.

At the rear, the gable wings include a rendered right wing with 20th-century fenestration, featuring a canted leaded light bay on the ground floor, and a left wing that is similar but retains some earlier windows.

Inside, the tavern boasts 17th-century panelling, exposed framing with passing-braces, chamfered ceiling beams, a moulded plasterwork ceiling, and a 19th-century dogleg staircase.
