Description

The buildings at 1, 2, and 3 Bull Ring in Ludlow are a group of shops and dwellings dating to the early 18th century, with Nos. 2 and 3 being refronted in the 20th century. They are constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof, half-hipped to the right, and have 17th and later brick stacks to the rear. The buildings are three storeys high plus an attic and cellar, with a 10-window front. No. 1 has late 19th-century 2/2 sash windows; Nos. 2 and 3 have early 19th-century 6/6 sashes. A storey band runs along the front, with similar sashes above it. There’s a visible seam between Nos. 1 and 2, where blocked openings have been mutilated. No. 1 has been raised in the 19th century, featuring brick modillion eaves. It has a late 19th-century shopfront with a 20th-century glazed door between windows with moulded glazing shafts, and a canted return to King Street with further recessed shop windows. Nos. 2 and 3 have 20th-century shopfronts with separate entrances to the upper floors. The rear of No. 2 includes an early 19th-century wing with box framing in the right gable and a brick stack. A similar wing to No. 3 has a 3/6 sash window to the second floor. There is a rendered, reduced brick stack to the rear of the main range, along with 19th-century leantos. The interior of No. 1 shows exposed stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops to the ground, first, and second floors, along with rubble and 17th-century brickwork to the rear wall. A 17th-century dogleg staircase with turned balusters is present, along with a 19th-century addition to the attic and a queen strut truss, and a 19th-century raising of the front roof pitch. Nos. 2 and 3 feature 17th-century timber framing with 18th-century alterations, 19th-century doors and fireplaces, and a dogleg staircase with stick balusters. An inscription on the glass of a front window reads "1841".
