Description
Nos. 44 and 46 on The Street is a house that has been converted into two shops with dwellings. It dates from the late 17th century and has been enlarged and significantly altered over time. The exterior features roughcast render and weatherboard painted white, which is believed to cover a timber frame. The building has red tile roofs and brick chimneys, with a double-pile plan beneath a two-span roof, where the front range is longer and overlaps the rear.
The structure is two-and-a-half storeys high, and the three-bay facade facing the street has modern single-storey shop fronts that are not of special interest. However, the first floor retains some historical features, including imitation quoins, three 12-pane unhorned sash windows, and a wooden dentilled cornice that runs around the building. The hipped roof has two flat-roofed dormers added, and there are external chimneys on the end walls, with the right-hand chimney being larger. The right-hand return wall and the exposed end of the rear range are weather-boarded.
The rear range is also weather-boarded and has a cornice similar to the front. At ground floor, No. 46 is covered by a long flat-roofed extension that is not of special interest, while No. 44 features a modern glazed door and a window. On the first floor, No. 44 has two 12-pane unhorned sash windows, while No. 46 includes a large louvred ventilator and a dormer ventilator with a semi-circular hood. At the west end, there is a small single-storey extension with a hipped roof, which has an extruded gable chimney. The interior has been altered at the ground floor, but further inspection was not conducted.
