Description

Fowler's Cottage is a cottage, likely dating from the late 17th century, with an 18th-century addition to the rear, and subsequently altered. The construction is timber-framed with a gable wall, a rear wing, and chimneys made of red handmade brick, topped with a red tile roof, and some tile-hanging on the left gable. The cottage forms an L-shape with a two-unit front range and a single-unit rear wing. The front has two storeys and two bays; the exposed timber frame consists of large timbers, including a sill, wallplate, principal wall posts at the corners and in the centre, a mid-level rail, and thin studs and rails. An inserted two-light casement window is located to the right of the central post, appearing to fill a former doorway. There is a three-light casement window to the left, a larger three-light fixed window to the right, and two smaller three-light casements at the first floor directly under the wallplate. Large external chimney stacks are present at both gables, and a full-height lean-to extends from the right-hand gable. The rear wall is brick at ground floor, with timber-framing above, and has two single-light casements. The rear wing has segmental-headed openings, including an inserted or relocated doorway and a two-light casement to the left of it (with no openings above). A large external chimney stack is found at the rear gable, partially obscured by a lean-to. The interior was not inspected, but the rear wing is reported to contain a bread oven.
