Description
Howard Cottage and Ivy Cottage are a pair of former cottages, originally known as Ashtead Cottage. They likely date back to the early 17th century but were mostly remodeled around 1800 and have since been extended and enlarged. The cottages are constructed from white painted brick with a red tiled roof. Each cottage has a single-depth, two-unit plan, with one additional unit added to the left end of No.1, and both cottages feature rear extensions.
They are two storeys high, and the original entrances were located in the gable walls; however, the doorway to No.1 has been moved to the front wall of the added bay. Each cottage's front wall features a two-centred arched casement window with Y-tracery in the head on both floors. No.1 has a small arched stairlight window above its door, while No.3 has a window on the first floor of the gable wall that matches those at the front. The cottages have steeply-pitched roofs with a ridge chimney at the junction and a gable chimney at the left end.
Inside No.1, the first floor reveals an exposed wall-plate on the rear wall, a large roughly-hewn tie-beam, and two windbraces. Historical records indicate that a house existed on this site as early as 1638, and in the 19th century, the cottages were occupied by domestic staff from Howard House, which was formerly located to the west.
