Description
This is a probably 18th-century house with an attached barn and outhouse, located on Crampshaw Lane in Ashtead. Originally known as The Old Cottage, the buildings have been combined into a single dwelling. The main house is likely built of brick, now rendered and painted white, with a timber-framed extension at the south end. The barn is weather-boarded and painted white. The house is rectangular, running north-south, and the barn is set at a right angle, linked to the southwest corner.
The west front of the house has two storeys and three bays, displaying a symmetrical design. It features a central doorway and two 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor, each fitted with shutters. The first floor has three similar windows, although the rightmost window has been altered to a top-hung casement. A large external chimney is located on the left gable, and a small ridge chimney sits at the junction between the house and the extension. The timber-framed extension to the right includes a doorway, ground-floor casement windows (one with three lights, one with a single light, both with shutters), and exposed timber framing with thin posts and studs with passing braces on the first floor, concluding with a 12-pane sash window at the left end.
A short, one-story link connects the house to the barn. The north side of the barn features a central doorway flanked by former garage doors, now fitted with sliding windows. A sliding garage door is at the west end. The rear and interior of the house were not inspected.
