Description
Nos. 1 and 2 on The Street is a building divided into two houses, dating from the 16th century and later. It has two storeys and an L-shaped form. The structure is timber-framed and rendered, featuring 20th-century pargetting. The roof is pantiled, although it was formerly thatched. A large internal chimney stack has a 19th-century red brick shaft finished in white brick.
On the ground storey, there are three early 19th-century window openings with reeded surrounds; two have 20th-century casement windows, while one has a large fixed small-paned window. The upper storey features three small-paned sash windows with cased frames.
No. 1 has a two-bay front range with later divisions and a one-bay wing at the rear. Inside, there is a heavy exposed timber ceiling and an end chimney stack with a remodelled hearth and lintel. The ceiling includes a chamfered main beam and closely-set wide unchamfered joists, which may date from the late 15th century. The roof over this range was replaced in the late 17th century, and the roof over the main range was completely renewed after a partial collapse about 20 years ago.
No. 2 has a three-bay front range with exposed timbering. The upper storey retains the remains of three trusses with solid arched braces, some of which are mutilated, and there is no evidence of original partitions. The chimney stack in this section appears to be an insertion.
