Description
Chadwell Mill is a mid-19th century mill constructed of red brick with an old plain tile roof. It stands two storeys high with a garret. The building features a toothed brick eaves cornice and has an end stack on the right side. On the first floor, there are four two-light segmental-headed casement windows, while the ground floor has three similar windows on the right. Between the first and second windows from the right on each floor, there is a segmental-headed boarded door. To the left, there is a segmental-headed wheel opening with two half-height boarded doors. The right-hand gable end has two segmental-headed garret windows. There is also a one-storey shed set back to the right, which has a segmental-headed boarded door on the left and a small segmental-headed window on the right.
Inside, the mill retains a complete set of fittings, including an enclosed cast iron overshot wheel, gearing, vertical and horizontal shafting, and two sets of stones with housings marked "MAY AND HILTON MANUFACTURERS FLEET STREET LIVERPOOL." There are also grain bins in the attic with a central raised walkway. At the rear of the mill, there is a mill pond with a weir. This mill is particularly noteworthy for its surviving machinery.
