Description
Blackdown Mill is an 18th-century mill with 19th-century additions, built on earlier foundations. The original core of the mill is four bays wide and constructed of brick, featuring a moulded stone eaves cornice. The four-bay extension to the right is brick at ground floor level and weatherboarded above. The 18th-century section has a steeply pitched plain tile roof with gabled ends, while the 19th-century section has a slate roof that is hipped at the south side. The mill is two storeys high with an attic. It has square fixed windows with glazing bars, except for a tall, centrally placed single window with lattice glazing, under a rusticated stone flat arch lintel. Below this window is a miniature three-bay round arched arcade, and further down, an elliptical stone arch over the mill stream, which encloses a grille that allows visibility of the water wheel. Two 19th-century arcaded balconies are positioned at first floor level, supported by a pair of octagonal posts. A gabled hoist projects from the roof in the center. A tall brick chimney stack is located at the rear of the building.
