Description

Longwick Mill is a mid-to-late 18th-century mill with an attached millhouse and barn. The mill and barn have ground floor walls of brick in English bond, and timber-framed upper storeys with weatherboard cladding. They are topped by old tile roofs. The mill itself is two storeys high, with a loft for grain bins, and has two bays. The ground floor has 20th-century three-light leaded casements with segmental heads, and the first floor has 20th-century three-light wooden casements with top lights. Each floor has a board door to the left of the centre, and there is a door and loft entry at the right end. Roof timbers have been renewed. Original ladders and some millstones remain, but the water wheel and other machinery have been removed. The barn, set back to the right, is two storeys high with five bays. It features irregular board doors and windows, 20th-century hoppers to the front, and a 20th-century lean-to on the right side. Its roof has queen strut trusses and curved braces to the tie beams. The millhouse, early 19th century, is of brick, rendered and whitewashed to the front and has an old tile roof, half-hipped to the left, with brick chimneys at the rear. The house is two storeys high with three bays of three-pane sashes. A central six-panel door is complemented by a rectangular fanlight and a 20th-century gabled hood.
