Description
The Longwick War Memorial is a war memorial erected in 1920. It features a granite Celtic cross with a slightly tapering shaft, set upon a rough stone plinth that has a two-stepped base. The cross is adorned with decorative knotwork and a central boss on its face. Surrounding the memorial is a paved area, enclosed by an iron fence and gate topped with spearhead finials.
On the front of the plinth, a polished section displays a black-painted lead inscription that reads:
THIS STONE WAS ERECTED/ BY THE INHABITANTS & FRIENDS OF LONG WICK/ IN HONOUR & EVERLASTING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE WORLDS GREAT WAR./ 1914-1919.
Below this inscription are the names of fourteen fallen soldiers from 1914-1919, arranged in two columns of seven. At the bottom of the plaque is another inscription that states:
"GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS".
Additionally, there is a stone tablet positioned at an angle on the step of the plinth, listing the names of seven men who lost their lives during the 1939-1945 conflict, with the inscription:
"THEY SHALL BE REMEMBERED".
