Description
Tipton Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 17th century, with mid-19th century additions and later alterations. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and timber-frame, topped with corrugated iron roofs. The building is arranged in an L-shape with two large gable-end stacks made of sandstone, one featuring a brick shaft. It has two storeys and the south elevation displays a pattern of one window to the left and two windows to the right, including an unglazed opening on the left. There is a two-light late 20th century casement window to the left of the gable stack and a contemporary three-light casement window to the right. On the ground floor, there is a segmentally headed mid-19th century window with a brick arch to the left of a four-panelled late 19th century door. A weathered buttress separates the two arms of the building. The gable features two windows similar to those on the ground floor. Inside, the southernmost room on the ground floor has a fireplace with chamfered stone jambs that rise to a shouldered lintel with ogeed chamfer stops. The ceiling in this room is divided into six panels by beams with wide chamfers. The west wall of the eastern ground floor room has close-studding and a chamfered segmentally headed doorway. The truss of the south-west arm includes raking struts from the tie to the principals.
