Description

The ruins stand on the site of a medieval castle, dating to the 17th century. The remains consist of brick and sandstone rubble sections of wall, with one section retaining window openings with brick dressings on two storeys, and a further section retaining a section of a fireplace. The castle belonged to the Say family in the 13th century and was later acquired by the Mortimers before passing to the Harley family in 1706. It occupies a prominent position overlooking the Lugg River plain and was inhabited until about 1870. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
