Description
Carter's Croft is a house that may date back to the 13th or 14th century and is currently in a semi-ruinous condition. It features a timber frame that has largely been refaced with brick and sandstone rubble, topped with a corrugated metal roof. The structure is a hall-house with four bays, which includes a 17th-century inserted stack that blocks the through-passage, as well as 17th-century inserted floors and a continuous lean-to with a catslide roof at the rear. The house has two storeys and three 19th-century multi-paned windows on the upper floor. While the ground floor openings have been removed, the original blocked doorway remains intact, featuring a pointed arched head formed by heavy timbers. Inside, there are three cruck trusses and a nicked ogee doorhead, along with 17th-century chamfered ceiling beams.
