Description
Mainstone House is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 17th to 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building features a timber frame, which is partly covered in sandstone and partly rendered, with tiled roofs and brick stacks. It has an L-shaped plan with wings extending to the east and north, and it includes a cellar and two storeys.
The south elevation has three windows; the first floor features 2- and 3-light 19th-century casements, while the ground floor has an early 19th-century 9-pane casement and a 6-pane casement to the left, alongside a late 20th-century glazing bar bow window to the right of a roughly central 20th-century door that has a gabled canopy. The roof on this side is hipped to the left.
The west elevation, which is a return from the 19th century, is made of stone and has three windows, including tripartite sashes on the ground floor and a central 6-panelled 19th-century door. The north gable reveals exposed timber framing with V-struts from the collar. Inside, the rear frame of the east/west range is exposed and features elaborate run-out chamfer-stops. There is also a priest hole said to exist in the east end of the upper floor of the east wing.
