Birches Knoll

Birches Knoll is a cottage, probably from the 18th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and timber-frame, partly covered in sandstone slabs, and features a thatched roof. The building has an extruded sandstone rubble end stack with a detached brick chimney. It has a rectangular plan, likely consisting of two bays, and is aligned east to west. The cottage is one storey with an attic.

On the south elevation, there are two ground floor windows, which are 2-light late 19th century casements. The first floor is unfenestrated and has bolted sandstone slab cladding. A central ledged door is topped with a sandstone slab canopy. The gable ends have attic windows. At the rear, there is a brick lean-to, and the rear wall displays a timber frame with two square panels above the plinth. The rafters are unsquared, giving a rustic appearance. Inside, the cottage features heavy chamfered ceiling beams with run-out chamfer stops and includes a baking oven.
