Description
Little Upcott is a cottage, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, with subsequent alterations. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and timber-frame, incorporating brick infill and brick alterations. The roof is covered in sandstone slate, and there are two sandstone end stacks, one with brick shafts. The cottage comprises two bays arranged roughly east/west, with the western bay higher and representing a different building phase. It includes a cellar, and has one or two storeys, plus an attic.
The west gable features a small first-floor window of two lights, added in the mid-20th century. A casement window is situated to the right of a substantial extruded sandstone stack. Exposed timber framing to the right of the stack displays curved braces from the collar to the end principals. There are two entrances: one to the eastern bay in the north return, and the other to the same bay via a glazed porch on the south return.
The north elevation has a painted brick front to the west bay, dating from the mid-19th century, with segmentally headed openings. The timber frame of the west bay is composed of four rectangular panels from the cill to the wall-plate, while the eastern bay has three panels.
Inside, the ground floor ceiling beams are characterised by lamb's tongue chamfer stops.
